The Great Pretender ..

This evergreen oldies song is always with me even my late beloved dad has gone to another world system.  Ffortunately I was grew up with this kind of song.  I still love singing them in the pub.

"The Great Pretender" is a popular song recorded by The Platters, with Tony Williams on lead vocals, and released as a single on November 3, 1955. The words and music were created by Buck Ram,[1] the Platters' manager and producer who was a successful songwriter before moving into producing and management. "The Great Pretender" reached the number one position on both the R&B and pop charts in 1956.[2] It also reached the UK charts peaking at number 5.

Buck Ram reports that he wrote the song in about 20 minutes in the washroom of the Flamingo Hotel in order to have a song to follow up the success of "Only You (And You Alone)". Stan Freberg parodied this version.^[1]
In 2004, the song was voted 360th greatest song of all time by Rolling Stone.^[3] Plas Johnson played tenor saxophone.

I am singing this oldies again.  Are there any smoke getting unto your ears?  These oldies seems fading away from this generation.  Not many people know this type of songs.

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 musical Roberta. The song was sung in the original Broadway show by Tamara Drasin. Its first recorded performance was by Gertrude Niesen, who recorded the song with orchestral direction from Ray Sinatra, Frank Sinatra's second cousin,[1] on October 13, 1933. Niesen's recording of the song was released by Victor, catalog# VE B 24454, with the b-side, "Jealousy", featuring Isham Jones and his Orchestra.[2] Paul Whiteman had the first hit recording of the song on the record charts in 1934.[3] The song was later reprised by Irene Dunne, who performed it in the original 1935 film adaptation of the musical, co-starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott. The song was also included in the 1952 remake of Roberta, Lovely to Look At, in which it was performed by Kathryn Grayson. It is perhaps best known today from its chart-topping 1958 hit recording by The Platters.

Only You (Cover Version of The Platters)

ONLY YOU ...

This is one of the songs I grew up with and naturally comes to me easily.  These oldies are naturally always with me.

The Platters first recorded the song for Federal Records on May 20, 1954, but the recording was not released. In 1955, after moving to Mercury Records, the band re-recorded the song (on April 26) and it scored a major hit when it was released in May. In November that year, Federal Records released the original recording as a single (B-side - "You Made Me Cry") which sold poorly.[3] Platters bass singer Herb Reed later recalled how the group hit upon its successful version: "We tried it so many times, and it was terrible. One time we were rehearsing in the car ... and the car jerked. Tony went 'O-oHHHH-nly you.' We laughed at first, but when he sang that song—that was the sign we had hit on something."[4] According to Buck Ram, Tony Williams' voice "broke" in rehearsal, but they decided to keep this effect in the recording. This was the only Platter's recording on which songwriter and manager Ram played the piano.[2]

The song held strong in the number-one position on the U.S. R & B charts for seven weeks, and hit number five on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.[5] It remained there for 30 weeks, beating out a rival cover version by a white band called The Hilltoppers. When the Platters track, "The Great Pretender" (which eventually surpassed the success of "Only You"), was released in the UK as Europe's first introduction to The Platters, "Only You" was included on the flipside. In the 1956 film Rock Around the Clock, The Platters participated with both songs "Only You" and "The Great Pretender".

California Dreaming ....

While I was at the beach at Sunderland, England, I was accidentally scan some of the songs over my phone and seeking new songs to sing.  This song caught my attention and since then I had began learning up this beautiful song.  I also have the similar dreams too .. I have long to be resident of California state.  It is called California Dreaming ...

"California Dreamin'" is a song written by John Phillips and Michelle Phillips and was first recorded by Barry McGuire.^[2] However, the best known version is by The Mamas & the Papas, who sang backup on the original version and released as a single in 1965. The song is #89 in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.^[3] The lyrics of the song express the narrator's longing for the warmth of Los Angeles during a cold winter in New York City.

The song became a signpost of the California Myth^[4] and the arrival of the nascent counterculture era.^[5][6]

"California Dreamin' " was certified as a Gold Record (single) by the RIAA in June 1966^[7] and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001.^[8]

The song was written in 1963 while John Phillips and Michelle Phillips were living in New York.^[9] He dreamed about the song and woke her up to help him write it. Michelle Phillips enjoyed visiting churches, and she and John Phillips visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, which inspired the second verse of "California Dreamin’" ("Stopped into a church..."). John hated the verse, as he was turned off to churches by unpleasant memories of parochial school, but he couldn't think of anything better so he left it in.^[10][11] At the time, John and Michelle Phillips were members of the folk group "The New Journeymen", which evolved into The Mamas & the Papas.

They earned their first record contract after being introduced to Lou Adler, the head of Dunhill Records, by Barry McGuire. In thanks to Adler, they sang the backing vocals to "California Dreamin'" with members of the session band The Wrecking Crew^[12] on McGuire's album This Precious Time. The Mamas & the Papas then recorded their own version using the same instrumental and backing vocal tracks to which they added new vocals^[13] and an alto flute solo by Bud Shank. P. F. Sloan did the guitar introduction.^[14] McGuire's original vocal can be briefly heard on the left channel at the beginning of the record, having not been completely wiped.^[15]

The single was released in late 1965 but was not an immediate breakthrough. After gaining little attention in Los Angeles upon its release, Michelle Phillips remembers that it took a radio station in Boston to break the song nationwide.^[16] After making its chart debut in January 1966,^[17] the song peaked at number 4 in March on both the Billboard Hot 100, lasting 17 weeks, and Cashbox, lasting 20 weeks.^[18] "California Dreamin'" was the number 1 single of 1966 in Billboard^[19] and tied for number 1 with "Ballad of the Green Berets" in Cashbox. "California Dreamin'" also reached number 23 on the UK charts upon its original release and re-charted after its use in a Carling Black Label commercial in 1997, eventually peaking at number 9 there.

First Attempt again singing one of my teenager's song.  She's FRESH FRESH exciting ...so exciting to me ...
